Diffraction grating- if I have 500slits per mm, why don't I get thousands of little fringes on the screen?

I understand that if you decrease slit separation, it increases fringe separation, but I can't understand why when a beam of light diffracts thousands of times over a few millimeters I only get say three fringes either side of the central fringe...please help
